The Henry Baines Papers contain materials of the Baines, McDermott and Maynard families. Diverse topics are covered, including early land holdings in West Feliciana Parish, medical education in England, Confederate States Army service, and the cotton trade in New Orleans. Approximately nine items from Baines' papers, 1817-1818, relate to medical education, including lecture passes and other printed materials such as a broadside signed by Henry Baines. Letters from Henry Baines' son, Edward Baines, describe Confederate military living conditions in the area of Columbus, Kentucky, 1861, and comment on various military units and army maneuvers near Tullahoma, Tennessee, 1863. Papers, 1796-1833, of Henry Baines' father-in-law, Patrick McDermott, consist of Spanish land grants, land deeds, petitions for appointment of tutor for minor children, and other legal documents regarding McDermott's estate. Papers of Isaac N. Maynard, Baines' son-in-law, include family letters, 1838-1852, and an article, ca. 1884, on the Cotton Factors and Planters Exposition of New Orleans. Other noteworthy items include an 1831 contract for the resale of a Negro woman, and approximately one hundred legal settlement documents (fieri facias), 1889-1903, addressed to Edward Baines.
